This year, Elephants Alive celebrated 6 years of running our bees and trees research project in Jejane Private Nature Reserve. The research has shown that 82% of the marula trees with beehives are still alive, in comparison to 56% of the control trees. We have also never had a marula tree with an active beehive pushed over by an elephant. This research is being written up as a part of a PhD, with more results to be released very soon! 🐘🐝🌳 Video credit: Kendra Carano | Elephants Alive

It’s not just humans who look forward to marula season – elephants are famously fond of the delicious fruit, and sniffing out fallen fruits and popping them into their mouths lets us see the remarkable sensitivity and dexterity of their trunks in action 🐘 ___________________ #marula #marulafruit #elephant #safari #nature #bush #royalmalewane #greaterkruger #luxurysafari #wildlife #wildlifephotography #southafrica | Royal Malewane

A bull Elephant giving a Marula tree a nudge. In the summer months the female marula trees bear soft, juicy fruits that elephants love to eat. By ‘shaking’ the tree, fruits will drop and the elephant can then feed on it. Senalala Safari Lodge #elephant #africa #marula #feed #food #nature #wild | Senalala Safari Lodge

It’s officially Marula Season 🍈🌞 and we are here for it! These golden fruits are one of nature’s little treasures. Indigenous to Southern Africa, marulas are packed with goodness. Did you know marulas are full of vitamin C and fibre, making them an amazing snack 🐒💕 Monkeys absolutely love them! The juicy flesh helps keep them hydrated and provides natural energy, plus the sweet taste makes them a total favourite around here. And little Maddie. She LOVES marulas more than anything so far 🍈💛

We came across a herd of elephants as they crossed the road and moved toward a marula tree. Elephants often feed on tree bark, especially during drier periods, as it provides important nutrients and roughage. Using their tusks, they carefully wedge the tusk between the bark and the trunk, pushing it loose. Once the bark is broken, they tear off smaller pieces with their trunks and eat them. This behaviour shows how tusks are essential tools for feeding and survival, not just for defence. #safari

Marula Hill | Africa Safari Specialists on Instagram: "There’s a reason we’re called Marula Hill. The marula is known as the Tree of Life — resilient, generous, deeply rooted. It feeds elephants. It shelters wildlife. It survives harsh seasons and still bears fruit. And sometimes, it becomes the perfect stage. Like this leopard, resting high in a marula tree — balanced, powerful, completely at ease. That’s the energy behind every journey we design. Grounded. Wild. Unforgettable. 🌳 #marulahilltr

A family of elephants blocked the road after feeding on a Marula tree. Its fruit is rich in sugar and can ferment naturally, sometimes leaving animals appearing unusually sluggish. Even local primates are known to take advantage of these fallen, fermented treats.

Veiled Earth | Nature Explained on Instagram: "Elephants are known to eat marula fruits, especially when they fall to the ground and become overripe. As these fruits sit and ferment naturally, they can develop small amounts of alcohol, which led to the long-standing belief that elephants can get “drunk” after eating them. While a single marula fruit contains very little alcohol, elephants may consume large quantities at once. Combined with natural sugar fermentation, this can sometimes lead to u
