On September 1, 2019, Category 5 Hurricane Dorian began lashing Grand Bahama Island with winds over 160 mph. It had just slammed Abaco with 185 mph winds – the strongest hurricane landfall ever observed in the Atlantic. The eyewall – or the innermost ring of extreme winds surrounding a hurricane's eye – first began battering Grand Bahama Island at 8:08 p.m. on Sunday night, September 1.
