The Appalachian folk song “Swannanoa Tunnel” is a cornerstone of Silkroad's American Railroad project. Born out of the work of unpaid and mistreated Black convict railroad workers, its origins have been largely lost as it became known as a white bluegrass standard. While filming season 2 of #MyMusicPBS, we took a deeper look into the story of “Swannanoa Tunnel,” from its origins to its erasure to its inclusion on the American Railroad tour. SWANNANOA WALTZ...Here’s a beautiful fiddle tune and three beautiful women musicians for your Wednesday. Kenny shot this outtake at a day of rehearsing with Alice, Rayna Gellert, and Laurelyn Dossett as they prepared for an episode of David Holt’s State of Music. Rayna wrote the fiddle tune which you’ll find on her “Ways of the World” album. As Jim Watson would say, “Mighty fine!” Rayna Gellert Alice Gerrard Laurelyn Dossett #swannanoawaltz #documentaryfilm #outtake #womenmusicians #fiddletunes

“Swannanoa Tunnel / Steel-Driving Man” is out today – the first single off the upcoming album ‘American Railroad’ with the Silkroad Ensemble. The song was written by wrongfully imprisoned Black men and women who unwillingly risked their lives building the Swannanoa Tunnel in North Carolina. Hundreds of them died, and many of them were buried along the very tracks they built. It serves as a tribute to them, along with “Steel-Driving Man,” a rendition of the popular traditional tune “John Henry,”

The old gas station by the bridge in Swannanoa is finally gone. After nearly 6 months in ruins, its empty space feels surreal. A piece of the past erased… and it’s strange to think we’ll never see it again. #Swannanoa #EndOfAnEra #CommunityChanges #MemoryLane #GoneButNotForgotten #MountainLife | BeLoved Asheville

On the ground in Asheville-Marshall-Weaverville-Black Mountain- Swannanoa. A little song for the heart waves and for our cherished rivers and waters that we love so much. We are still organizing basic needs for folks and helping friends clean out their flooded homes. We will be organizing some benefit concerts (online and in person here in WNC) as well as sharing some GoFundMe’s of some cherished local artists so keep in touch yall ! There is so much work to do to get folks back on their feet he

The Swannanoa Tunnel transformed the Blue Ridge Mountains. This 1,832-foot tunnel is the longest in a complex of six tunnels completed between 1875 and 1879, and the railroad that goes through them connected the mountain’s primeval forests to the Atlantic seaboard. The Western North Carolina Railroad (WNCR), used mostly Black people on its construction crews. Those workers labored at gunpoint. This was their song.
