President Trump has sent letters threatening tariffs of 25% or more to the leaders of Japan, South Korea and 12 other nations, turning up the heat on two close U.S. allies after months of trade talks have yet to seal a deal.

President Donald Trump will impose 25% tariffs on Japan and South Korea next month, prolonging the “Liberation Day” duty pause on those two allies amid trade negotiations. Trump announced the tariffs in letters to Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung on Monday.
