KLAMATH COUNTY, OR - the U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 2.7 magnitude quake occurred close to Bonanza Friday afternoon.

The backup dam, which stands just downstream from the original, was built in 2005 after experts determined the original dam would not survive a 7.3 earthquake similar to the 1886 Charleston quake. The backup is intended to catch the lake if the original dam fails in a 7.3-7.5 quake.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 2.6 magnitude quake rattled near Petrolia Thursday morning. A tremor struck the region at 3:19 a.m. The earthquake's epicenter was situated roughly 17 miles west-northwest of Petrolia and occurred at a depth of 15 miles.
