An air quality alert was reported by the National Weather Service on Saturday at 10:15 a.m. EDT in effect until Sunday at 10:15 p.m. EDT for Cass, St. Joseph, Branch, Hillsdale and Berrien counties.

Unhealthy air quality is forecast, with periods of Very Unhealthy air quality possible for several hours. Folks should expect to see and smell smoke, and Air Quality Alerts are in effect. Conditions will improve slightly tonight through Sunday.

The current infrastructure also isn’t set up to fully account for the shifting behavior of wildfire smoke, which can travel hundreds of miles or more from fire sources to affect air quality and public health in distant communities.
