HOWEVER, the original question was about a Mercruiser 188, which is a V8 Ford sterndrive and is not plagued with the problems you have listed.

Re: Mercruiser trim/tilt wiring For the trim limit switch, look for connectors with a purple/white wire and two blue/white wires. Polarity is not important. Adjust the TL switch to give a measurement of 21 3/4 inches (+- 1/4 inch) center to center on the trim cylinder bolts.
